Our Story
About Harris Glass Co Inc
In 1946, James W. Harris needed extra money to support his family. He was a night shift car inspector on the railroad and rode his bicycle every evening to work.
His brother, Merl, couldn't find reliable people to "cut" windshields for cars and suggested he begin supplying glass to the salvage yard. Out of that garage on Peter Street in Logansport began a cottage business for Jim's friends and acquaintances.
Accounting was done the "billfold” method and people pulled into the alley for curbside service. Repairing and replacing glass and screens for homes and businesses also began to fill his time until he was working full-time during the day with all sorts of glass requests.
They Soon Opened a Business Location
James L. Harris came home from the Korean War and IU to join his father full-time in 1956. Soon after, they opened a business location at 61 and High in Logansport and the business grew steadily.
Harris Glass was incorporated in 1963 and moved to its present location in 1966.
Jim took on commercial glass replacement and storefront work, mirrors, tabletops, and storm doors and windows and replacement windows and doors over the years.
The Business Grew and Expanded
In 1991, Timothy L Rich, Jim’s son-in-law, joined the business as a salesperson. Raised on a farm in Central Illinois, he began his career in agri-business working for Eli Lill’s as division. He gained valuable expertise in business sales and marketing with his exposure to customer sales in The Midwest and Southeast US. However, he always wanted to be in small business with a strong focus on customer service.
Under Tim’s leadership, Harris Glass has grown and expanded with specialty products and services like automatic door operators, frame less shower enclosures, and glass railings.
